1853: South African Republic (commonly called Transvaal), succeeds the earlier Winburg-Potchefstroom Republic

1877: Annexed by Britain as Transvaal Colony

1880: Independence restored after the First Boer War, but as a British vassal until 1884

1900: Mostly occupied by Britain in the Second Boer War

1902: Transvaal Bittereinders surrender, becomes a British colony again

1910: Becomes a province of the newly-established Union of South Africa
