Chronology

1883: Tonkin and Annam become protectorates of France

1887: Becomes a constituent within French Indochina

1940-1945: Vichy French administration

1945: Japanese occupation, end of French protectorate unilaterally declared, French rule restored 5 months later, most of Tonkin soon under the control of North Vietnam

1949: French Indochina dissolved, Tonkin nominally part of the new State of Vietnam in the French Union, but all of it is under North Vietnam by 1954
