Chronology
1492: Columbus establishes the outpost of La Navidad on his first voyage and claims Hispaniola for Spain
1493: La Navidad is destroyed by the Lucayan-Taino chief Caonabo of Maguana. Later in the year, Columbus returns on his second voyage and reestablishes the colony with the settlement of La Isabella.
1521-1821: Colony subordinated to New Spain
1659: Western part taken over by France, recognized by Spain in 1697
1795: Ceded to France
1805-1806: Occupied by Haiti
1809: France cedes Santo Domingo back to Spain
1821: Independence from Spain declared as the "Republic of Spanish Haiti", invaded and annexed by Haiti 2 months later. Independence restored as the Dominican Republic in 1844.
1861-1865: Colony briefly reestablished before Dominican Restoration War.
