1965: Unilateral declaration of independence, unrecognized
1964-1979: Rhodesian Bush War between Rhodesia and the rebel groups ZANU (mostly Shona, backed by China) and ZAPU (mostly Ndebele, backed by USSR)
1970: Republic declared
1979: Reformed into Zimbabwe-Rhodesia, another unrecognized state, which later became Zimbabwe after the Lancaster Hosue Agreement, a brief return to British rule, then independence restored after new elections.
