Chronology
1790: Settled by 9 of the Mutineers of the HMS Bounty and 19 Tahitian companions led by Fletcher Christian
1793: Pitcairn Massacre, eleven of the islanders (6 Tahitians and 5 mutineers) are killed after rising tensions and spreading alcoholism. Ned Young and John Adams assume leadership after Christian's murder. By 1800, Adams was the last surviving mutineer.
1808: Contact with the outside word is reestablished after an American seal hunting ship stumbles upon the island
1831: Entire population briefly relocates to Tahiti due to fears of overcrowding, but most return after 6 months
1832: Joshua Hill, an American adventurer, arrives in Pitcairn and declares himself president, exiling the prevbious leaders
1837: A British ship helps the Pitcairners overthrow hill and restore rule of the mutineers' descendants
1838: British protectorate established
1856: Population relocated to Nofolk Island after requests to Queen Victoria for help due to overcrowding.
1857-1864: 43 of the 163 relocated Pitcairners return to the island
1887: Pitcairn goes from a protectorate to a colony, under the oversight of the governor of Fiji until 1970
1902: Uninhabited islands of Henderson, Oeno, and Ducie added to the Pitcairn territory
