Chronology

1881: The State of North Borneo is established as a British protectorate in accordance with an agreement between the Sultanate of Sulu and the North Borneo Charter Company to cede or lease the territory of North Borneo. In Theory, Sulu still held formal suzerainty over the territory, but not in practice.

1942-1945: Occupied by Japan

1945-1946: British/Australian military administration

1946: Crown Colony established, end of involvement of the North Borneo Charter Company (as well as Sulu's nominal role)

1963: Joins Malaysia, becoming the State of Sabah
