1497: Giovanni Caboto first claims Newfoundland for England
1585: English colony established
1655-1713: France controls part of Newfoundland as the Plaisance colony of New France
1763-1774: Coast of Labrador under Newfoundland

1809-1927: Labrador border dispute between Lower Canada/Quebec and Newfoundland

1907: Independence from Britain
1934: Newfoundland voluntarily becomes a colony again due to economic breakdown from the Great Depression and public anger over government corruption, a six-member (three Newfoundlander, three British) commission is formed to govern Newfoundland until it is able to restore self-government.
1948: Two referendums are held to determine Newfoundland's future. The first had 44% in favor of independence, but since it didn't pass 50% a second referendum is held without the option of continued British rule, which placed third in the previous referendum, and Newfoundland votes by 52% to join Canada.
1949: Newfoundland becomes a province of Canada
