Netherlands Antilles
Constituent Country of the Netherlands (1948-2010)
Location: Caribbean
Capital City: Willemstad
Government type: Dutch Dependency
Main languages: Dutch, English, Papiamento
Main religions: Catholic Christianity, Protestant Christianity
Chronology
1948: Curaçao and Dependencies reformed into the Netherlands Antilles, a self-governing union of Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Saba, and Sint Eustatius
1954: Self-government granted
1986: Aruba leaves the Netherlands Antilles to become a separate territory
2000: Sint Maarten votes in a referendum to separate, prompting the other islands to hold their own referenda
2004: Bonaire and Saba vote to leave the Antilles for closer integration with the Netherlands.
2005: Curaçao votes for separation. Sint Eustatius votes for the status quo.
2010: After negotiations between the Netherlands and the five island governments, the Netherlands Antilles is dissolved. Curaçao and Sint Maarten take on constituent country status like what Aruba had since 1986, and Bonaire and Saba become "public bodies", making them legally part of the Netherlands proper but with a limited degree self-government. Sint Eustatius, the only island that voted to stay in the Netherlands Antilles, chose public body status after deliberation by the island council.
