1206: Temüjin unites the Mongols, takes the title of Genghis Khan, and begins a campiagn of rapid conquests, continued by his heirs
1260: The empire de facto breaks up into the Golden Horde, Ilkhanate, Chagatai Khanate, and Great Yuan after the death of Möngke Khan, but the Yuan Khans would continue to claim overlordship of all Mongol realms until the mid-14th century
