1530: Islands of Malta given to the Knights Hospitaller by the King of Sicily

1565: Ottoman Great Siege of Malta

1651-1665: Maltese attempts to establish Caribbean colonies

1798: France invades Malta and forces the knights to surrender the islands

1800: British counter-invasion expels French and governs islands nominally on behalf of Sicily

1802: France abandons claims by the Treaty of Amiens which stipulates that Malta be returned to the knights

1813: Britain makes Malta a crown colony

1814: Sicily and the Knights drop claims to Malta

1921-1933: Self-rule granted

1940-1943: Malta under siege by Germany and Italy

1962: Self-rule restored

1964: Independence from Britain

1974: Republic established
