Chronology
1881: Muhammad Ahmad declares himself Mahdi and launches a revolt against Egypt in Sudan
1885: Mahdists capture Khartoum and establish their state. Muhammad Ahmad dies a few months later but Abdallahi ibn Muhammad succeeds him as leader of the Mahdist movement.
1899: Anglo-Egyptian forces defeat Mahdists at Umm Diwaykarat, ending the Mahdist regime, but some rebel holdouts persisted to 1909
