1557: Portugal establishes their outpost at Macau
1580-1640: Self-governing due to not recognizing the Spanish-Portuguese personal union
1887: China gives up claims to Macau in perpetuity
1941-1945: Japanese soldiers make incursions into Macau and control movement in and out of the territory, but don't fully occupy it
1951-1976: Designated overseas province
1967: Portugal offers to give Macau to China but is turned down, this happens again in 1974
1999: Portugal cedes Macau to China as an autonomous area in accordance with a 1987 Sino-Portuguese treaty
