Chronology
1951: Kingdom of Libya founded by the merging of the Emirate of Cyrenaica with two post-WWII military zones: French-administered Fezzan and British-administered Tripolitania.
1969: Military coup overthrows king and establishes a socialist and Nasserist-influenced republic
1977: Muammar Gaddafi reforms Libya into a state modeled after his own ideosyncratic ideology, styling it as a "Jamahiriyya", a word he invented that doesn't have a clear translation, but could be approximated as "People's Republic" or "State of the Masses".
2011: Gaddafi overthrown in a civil war and a provisional government is established
2014-2020: Second Libyan Civil War between rival governments in Tripoli and Tobruk
