Kosovo is claimed by Serbia in its entirety and is recognized by just about half of the world's other countries. The first republic from 1991-2000 was entirely unrecognized, and didn't fully control Kosovo.

Note: Kosovo used the Yugoslav Dinar during its first period of independence, and unilaterally adopted the Euro in 2002, which it still uses today. The banknotes listed here were printed as "provisional issues", and information on them is scarce and contradictory. Some sources say they were to be sold to collectors as a fundraising effort for humanitarian relief during the Kosovo War, and not intended for circulation. Other sources say they were intended to circulate as a replacement for the Yugoslav Dinar, and were used by the Kosovo Liberation Army to buy weapons. What is known is that they were apprently comissioned by the Kosovo Republic Bank Commission and were produced by American numismatist Joe Lang. The notes are all overprints on contemporary Macedonian notes.
