1589: Mughal Conquest
1846: British give Kashmir, captured from the Sikhs, to the ruler of Jammu, establishing the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir
1947: Kashmir independent, but soon invaded by Pakistan, in response, Maharaja Hari Singh agrees to join India in exchange for Indian military intervention
1948: First Kashmir war ends with the region split between India and Pakistan, but with both claiming all of it
