1920: Hungary votes to restore monarchy, but doesn't actually do it, instead establishing a regency under Admiral Miklós Horthy who serves as head of state

1944: Horthy's negotiations with Allies prompt Nazi Germany to invade and occupy Hungary, depose the regent, and install Ferenc Szálasi of the fascist Arrow Cross party as puppet dictator, opposition groups form provisional counter government against Szálasi with backing from Soviet Union

1944-1947: Soviet Occupation

1949: Communist government installed

1989: Communist rule ends
