1804: Haiti declares independence from France, later in the year, President Jean-Jacques Dessalines delcares himself emperor
1806: Dessalines is killed, and in the ensuing power vacuum, Haiti splits into two states, the north led by Henri Christophe, and the south lead by Alexandre Petion
1820: Haiti is reunited by the Southern government under Jean-Pierre Boyer
1825: Haitian independence recognized bty France
1849: President Faustin Solouque declares himself emperor
1859: Solouque overthrown and republic restored
1915-1934: US occupation (and protectorate to 1936)
1957-1986: Duvalier dictatorship
2021-present: Widespread disorder and government breakdown following assassination of president Jovenel Moïse
