Chronology

1721: Denmark establishes a presence in Greenland (Norway, being in union with Denmark, has sovereignty over Greenland from 1261, but actual Norwegian control disappeared with the last Norse settlements in the 15th century and was forgotten)

1775-1908: Administered by the Royal Greenland Trading Department

1782: Split into two colonies of North and South Greenland

1932-1933: Norway attempts to claim east coast of Greenland

1940-1945: After Denmark is occupied by Nazi Germany, Greenland votes to assume sovereign powers Denmark can no longe perform, becoming de facto independent, and places itself under United States protection for the duration of the war.

1950: North and South Greenland united

1979: Self-government granted, expanded in 2009
