Note: The Falkland Islands are claimed in their entirety by Argentina, who calls them "Islas Malvinas". The claim was the cause of the 1982 Falklands war, and despite a 2013 referendum supporting continued British rule by 99%, Argentina maintains the claim.

1764-1767: French Settlement on East Falkland Island
1766: British Establish a settlement on West Falkland
1767: France gives their outpost to Spain, both Britain and Spain claim the entire archipelago
1774: Britain withdraws
1811: Spanish withdraw, islands effectively abandoned
1820: American captain claims the islands for Argentina, but Argentina doesn't pursue the claim
1826: French adventurer resettles former French outpost for Argentina
1829: Province of Buenos Aires formally claims islands on behalf of the entire Argentine Confederation
1831: Argentine outpost destroyed by American captain after they seize three American ships
1832: Britain reasserts claim of sovereignty
1982: Argentina invades, occupies, and annexes the Falklands, expelled by British counteroffensive two months later
