1918: Belarusian Democratic Republic independent from the Russian Empire

1919: Socialist Republic of Belorussia founded in opposition to BDR and aligned with Russian Bolsheviks. Later federated with Bolshevik-occupied Lithuania

1920: Lithuanian-Belarusian Union ends, Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic created

1922: Becomes a republic within the Soviet Union

1991: Independence restored

Note: Through part of 1919, both the BDR and Socialist Republic existed at the same time, controlling different territory.
