Note: Artsakh was claimed in its entirety by Azerbaijan and only recognized by three other states, all also widely unrecognized.

Chronology

1988-1994: First Nagorno-Karabkh War, resulting in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic controlling areas outside its nominal territorial claims

1992: Nagorno-Karabakh region, formerly an autonomous oblast within Soviet Azerbaijan, declares independence from Azerbaijan

2017: Renamed to Republic of Asrtakh

2020: Azerbaijani offensive reclaims all territories held by Artsakh outside of the NKAO's historical borders as well as about a third of territory within it.

2023: Azerbaijan invades and annexes the remainder of Artsakh, ethnic Armenian population expelled.
