1650: English settlers first arrive in Anguilla

1724: Administratively attached to St. Kitts

1967: Part of the Autonomous State of St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla, declares independence two months later in protest of continued rule of St. Kitts

1969: British rule restored with plans to separate Anguilla from St. Kitts

1971: Separated from St. Kitts

Anguilla Dollar (1967-1970)

Note: The British West Indies Dollar and East Caribbean Dollar are the only currencies to widely circulate in Anguilla. The Anguilla dollar issues, consisting of counterstamped coins in 1967 and non-circulating mintage from 1969, never circulated and were more intended to express sovereignty of the short-lived republic than to be used as circulating coinage. Modern coins in Anguilla's name are in East Caribbean dollars.
